What solar panels cost in Atlantic Canada in 2026

Real installed prices per watt, what a typical home system runs, and the four things that actually move your quote up or down.

Most solar pages answer this question with a range so wide it tells you nothing. Here are the numbers we actually see in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island in 2026, and what makes a quote land at one end of the range or the other.

The short answer

Installed residential solar in the Maritimes runs roughly $2.60 to $3.40 per watt before incentives. For a typical home that means:

A 6 kW system, suited to a smaller household or a lower consumption home, lands around $16,000 to $20,000. An 8 kW system, the most common size we install, runs about $21,000 to $27,000. A 10 kW system, for larger homes or households with an EV or heat pumps, comes in around $27,000 to $34,000.

Battery storage is separate. It is a resilience purchase, not a savings purchase, and it should be quoted as its own line so you can decide on it independently.

What actually moves the number

Roof complexity. A single south facing plane with clear access is the cheapest thing we install. Multiple planes, dormers, steep pitch and awkward access all add labour, and labour is the part of a solar quote that does not fall over time.

Your electrical panel. Older homes sometimes need a service upgrade before a system can be connected. It is not a solar cost as such, but it lands in the same invoice, and a quote that ignores it is not a real quote.

Panel and inverter choice. Higher efficiency panels cost more per panel and fewer of them fit the same roof. On a constrained roof they are worth it because they raise the ceiling on how much you can produce. On a big open roof they often are not.

System size, in the right direction. Cost per watt falls as systems get bigger, so a 10 kW system costs less per watt than a 6 kW one. This is why undersizing to save money often backfires: you pay a higher rate per watt and generate less.

The number that matters more than the price

A cheaper system that produces less is not cheaper. What determines your return is cost per kilowatt hour produced over 25 years, not cost per watt installed.

That is why we quote against your actual power bills. A system sized to your consumption and your roof will beat a bigger or a cheaper one that was sized to a spreadsheet.

Where the incentives sit now

Nova Scotia's residential SolarHomes rebate closed in 2025. New Brunswick's solar rebate stopped taking registrations in May 2026. PEI has paused its program. So for most homeowners in 2026 the quote you get is close to the price you pay, and the return comes from net metering and from avoiding rising utility rates rather than from a rebate cheque.
