How net metering works in the Maritimes
Net metering is what makes solar pay off in the Maritimes. When your panels produce more power than you're using, the surplus flows back to the grid and your utility credits your account, so you effectively use the grid as a giant battery. Each province runs it a little differently:
- Prince Edward Island: Maritime Electric, systems up to 100 kW.
- New Brunswick: NB Power retail-rate credits, balances reset March 31.
- Nova Scotia: NS Power credits at ~19.1¢/kWh with a 12-month rollover.

New Brunswick is the one to watch right now: a proposed change would require an approved net metering application by October 31, 2026 to lock in one-to-one credit through 2037.
