Solar rebates in Atlantic Canada: what is left in 2026

Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and PEI all closed or paused their residential solar rebates. Here is what still pays you back, province by province.

Article

If you searched for a solar rebate in the Maritimes this year, you probably found a page telling you to apply for a program that is no longer taking applications. All three provinces changed their residential incentives between 2025 and 2026, and most of the guides online have not caught up.

Here is the honest picture as of August 2026, and what still puts money back in your pocket.

Nova Scotia

The residential stream of the SolarHomes rebate from Efficiency Nova Scotia closed in April 2025. It used to pay $0.30 per watt, capped at $3,000. There is no announced replacement for homeowners. The non profit and Indigenous community streams are still running.

What remains is net metering with Nova Scotia Power at roughly 19.1 cents per kWh. That number matters more than the rebate ever did, because it applies to every kilowatt hour your roof produces for the next 25 years, not just once at purchase.

New Brunswick

The solar stream of NB Power's Total Home Energy Savings Program stopped accepting new registrations on 27 May 2026. It paid about $200 per kW, up to $3,000. Anyone who registered before that date still needs installation and paperwork finished by 31 January 2027.

Net metering with NB Power continues at one to one retail credit for systems up to 100 kW. There is a proposed change to that arrangement with a deadline attached, and it is important enough that we wrote about it separately.

Prince Edward Island

The efficiencyPEI Solar Electric Rebate was the most generous in the country at $1,000 per kW, up to $10,000. The province paused new applications in 2026 while it finalises funding for the next cycle. Homeowners who already hold a pre approval letter can still proceed.

Paused is not the same as cancelled. If PEI reopens the program, the queue tends to fill quickly, so it is worth having your system designed and quoted before that happens rather than after.

What about the federal government

The $5,000 Canada Greener Homes Grant closed to new applicants in March 2024. Its replacement, the Canada Greener Homes Affordability Program, uses a direct install model aimed at low and moderate income households, and Nova Scotia and PEI are participating provinces.

For businesses, the 30 percent Clean Technology Investment Tax Credit is still in place, and it is now by far the largest solar incentive available anywhere in the region.

So is it still worth doing

Yes, and the arithmetic is not close. A rebate is a one time discount on the purchase. Net metering is what actually pays for the system, and electricity rates in the Maritimes have gone up, not down. Every rate increase makes the power you generate yourself worth more.

The rebates were the reason to go solar this year. Your power bill is the reason to go solar for the next twenty five.

We build every quote around your actual consumption and your utility's current rate, so you can see the payback with the incentives that exist today rather than the ones that existed last year.
